Pools and Fitness Centers

Menno Haven emphasizes a holistic approach to health and wellness by encouraging participants to continually develop a balance of five major dimensions: physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual.

Exercise centers with Keiser strength training equipment and other cardiovascular exercise equipment are available. Programs include wellness and fitness assessments offering individually tailored exercise programs, low impact aerobics and walking groups.

Residents are encouraged to use the heated indoor pools as a part of their fitness routine. Water programs include aqua aerobics, water walking and lap swimming. A soothing whirlpool spa is available for relaxation as well as to increase circulation.

The Wellness Centers function under the direction of a exercise physiologist and offer a wide range of education and interactive learning programs. Health and fitness programs that are offered by Menno Haven may include Tai Chi, Yoga, nutritional counseling, relaxation and therapeutic massage, meditation and health related issues such as stroke prevention and stress management.

Each campus offers pools and fitness centers to allow residents to stay healthy and keep fit.

Pastoral Care

The Menno Haven chaplains provide pastoral care and counseling services to all residents, their families, and staff persons. Their specific aim is to be a spiritual presence and resource to all persons, nurturing the spiritual commitments each person brings with them. In addition to pastoral visits with persons suffering critical illness, hospitalization, or other crisis event, the chaplains offer weekly Bible studies and worship services.

The chaplains minister in close cooperation with area pastors and complement their pastoral ministry to resident parishioners. Membership in the Menno Haven Christian Fellowship is available to residents who desire a close relationship with a faith community.

College Interaction Programs

Not only are Menno Haven residents able to attend activities of the Institute of Retired Persons (see below) but they are also able to enjoy events held at Wilson College, which is just a short walk from the Penn Hall campus. Retirement community residents can enjoy all that a college community offers as adult programs in both continuing education and/or self-enrichment are offered. Performers, nationally-known musicians and dances troupes frequent the adjacent college campus.

Also, within a short driving distance are Shippensburg University, Penn State University Campus at Mont Alto, Gettysburg College and the Mercersburg Academy. All provide resources for educational and cultural enrichment.

Great Decisions: Menno Village Resident ReadingInstitute of Retired Persons (IRP)

Organized in 1984 for the purpose of providing interesting educational opportunities for senior adults, the IRP makes its home on the Wilson College Campus. Classroom facilities and office space are located in the Haven Science Center Lecture Hall. A fall and spring semester offer daytime classes for members. Instructors from Wilson College, Shippensburg University and the Carlisle Army War College have participated in the program. For a nominal fee, members may attend any or all classes. Individual class attendance ranges from 40 to 80 people. The institute's enrollment is over 200 persons.

Campus Computer Clubs

Computer Club

Both Menno Village and Penn Hall campus residents are exploring the world of computers, as both campuses have active, resident-friendly computer centers. The residents themselves have formed “groups” which promote technology awareness. Members of the groups instruct or tutor others in the community as well as hold lectures and meetings with technological relevance.

Residents also get a feel for the computer world through one-on-one consultations with the more experienced web surfers. Eager to help fellow residents, many residents volunteer as tutors in the computer centers or in individual rooms. Residents may join the computer groups at any time and at any level of experience.

Resident Councils and Forums

Menno Haven Retirement Communities are resident-driven and provide many avenues for residents to offer input in campus life. One such avenue is through various resident councils. In each, residents elect representatives who act on their behalf as liaisons to management.

Some of our councils include:

Cottage Council
Residential Council
Northfield Resident Council
Nursing Center Resident Council
Corporate Council

A campus wide "Towne Meeting" is also hosted each quarter. These gatherings offer an open forum for updates from departments and residents concerning life on our campuses.
