The Green Team

The Menno Haven Green Team is a resident-driven group that was formed to increase recycling and to investigate ways to save energy, resources, and money.

Residents can assist the Green Team in several ways:

 ·       Volunteer to help with Green Team activities

 ·       Recycle as much material as possible

 ·       Encourage neighbors to recycle

 ·       Make suggestions to the Green Team on how to conserve materials and energy

The initial focus was on recycling. Until Menno Haven secured a contract that allowed single stream recycling, the Green Team held monthly recycling of paper and cardboard. However, that recycling has been folded into the regular weekly recycling that the Menno Haven grounds crew picks up each Wednesday morning. In addition, the Green Team accepts rechargeable batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s). Although the Green Team does not recycle electronic equipment, some businesses do accept electronic equipment, and, some local organizations sponsor electronic recycling.

Every month the Green Team has an article in Campus Connect that contains suggestions how to conserve. The monthly suggestions are listed in REDUCE, REUCE, RECYCLE.

From September, 2011 through about the end of 2012, the Menno Haven campus will be going through an energy audit. An outside company (Envinity out of State College) will look at, poke, prod, and test heating and cooling systems, insulation, electrical systems, plus many other aspects of the campus that use energy. When the audit is complete, the Envinity will make recommendations for how to save energy and give data on the cost of any needed renovations and the expected annual energy savings. Some actions may affect residents, so we will keep you informed on the progress and how any actions may affect you.
